Book Description:
In his 2014 homily for the Feast of Holy Guardian Angels, October 2, Pope Francis told those gathered for daily mass to be like children who pay attention to their “traveling companion. No one journeys alone, and no one should think that they are alone.
“According to Church tradition,” the pope said, “we all have an angel with us, who guards us . . . It is what God said: ‘I send an angel before you, to guard you, to accompany you on the way, so you will not be alone.'”
In this children’s book, angels wait anxiously and with great excitement to see which one of them will be chosen to be the guardian angel of a child that is to be born. This delightful book depicts the joy of all God’s creations anticipating the birth of another precious child. The sun shines brighter, the moon has a shinier glow, flowers grow taller, birds tweet more sweetly, and angels dance and sing with bliss, as all creation awaits another baby girl or boy.
Whenever a Child Is Born offers the perfect message for parents as it charmingly tells the story of how all of heaven and earth react to the news that a child is about to be born. The story comforts parents with the knowledge that their baby is a special gift from heaven to them, and that they will never be alone raising their child, and that their child will never ever be alone in life.
Parents never worry. No one journeys alone through life because whenever a child is born, he is given a guardian angel.

My Review: Whenever a Child is Born touched a memory of being told by my great grandmother about guardian angels and how they are with us and protect us our entire lives. I loved the illustrations, they are so vibrant and beautiful. My little ones loved listening to me read this and after had so many questions about angels and heaven. I love that this story lit a curiosity and engaged their minds as well as their spirits. If you are looking for a cute story to read to your littles about guardian angels and the warmth of protection they provide, then look no further than Nancy Diedrich’s Whenever a Chid is Born.

Out of the Mouths of Babes
Children can often ask the most innocent and thought-provoking questions. Even though we, as adults, know the answers to these simple inquires, we often struggle for the most uncomplicated words to satisfy a child’s curiosity.
As a Marriage and Family Therapist, I face these straightforward questions from children routinely. In a Family Therapy setting, questions arise from all members of the family. In a family where there is marital stress, for example, a child might ask, “Why can’t they just kiss and make-up?” or “Why don’t they talk nice to each other?”. I have had a child innocently ask, “How long is Daddy going to be in ‘timeout’?”, when parents choose to separate.
Children’s questions may seem naïve or immature, but in Family Therapy each family member is an individual client, that deserves a thoughtful and empathetic answer to any questions presented. And I have been presented with some real “doozies”, that caused me to pause in wonder.
There is one subject, in particular, on which children focus much of their dissatisfaction and questions in therapy. They want to know, why they are having another baby. Some children love having their parents all to themselves, and don’t want to rock that boat. So, I am often asked, “What do we need another baby for?”; “What if we don’t like the new baby?”; “What if it’s a girl?”; “What if it’s a boy?”; “What if it makes too much noise?” These are really difficult issues for some children, and they deserve considerate, age-appropriate answers.
This type of child-like question caused me to reflect on the subject of “having a new baby” from a child’s point of view. In doing so, the central theme of my children’s book, Whenever A Child Is Born, was conceived. I envisioned flowers growing taller, the sun shining brighter, birds chirping louder and all creatures celebrating the news that another baby was about to be born.
I also imagined angels anxiously waiting to hear which one of them would be chosen to be the guardian angel for this brand-new baby. My image of a guardian angel being chosen to accompany and protect a child through a lifetime is comforting to parents, as well as, children.
The storyline is fictional, but uplifting and reassuring to little brothers and sisters, who hear the news that a new baby is on the way. Strangely enough, new Moms and Moms-to-be have told me how much comfort they have gotten from this story. The book has actually become a “Go To” baby gift for many.
From a question “out of the mouth of babes”, (actually out of the mouths of young clients), a children’s book was born, that touches the hearts of new parents and their children as they await their new baby’s arrival.
Meet the Author:
Nancy Diedrich was born and raised in South Louisiana, where storytelling was not just an art form, but an authentic way of communicating. Everyone had a tale to tell! This was, more than likely, where her love of communication developed. With undergraduate degrees in English and speech, and graduate degrees in psychological counseling, Nancy learned that words can educate; they can entertain; they can inspire and they can heal. In Nancy’s career, she has been a teacher, a
counselor and an author, where the power of words always guided her in interaction with her students, clients and readers. Nancy’s value for genuine communication extends beyond her career, to the anchors of her life, which are her faith, her family and her friendships.
Whenever A Child Is Born is Nancy’s first published children’s book. In it, the reader gets a glimpse of this author’s compassion for family, and her gift of faith, as the story tells how all of heaven and earth react to the news that a child is about to be born.
