If there’s a thing I can say about Ascension, it’s that it will make you think. It certainly lives up to the promises of speculative science fiction! However, I must admit that I struggled to maintain a strong connection with this book, despite my curiosity about its premise.
At first glance, the book’s concept sounds fantastic. There’s so much going on here, both in the description/promise and in the book itself. Unfortunately, I believe the story simply attempted to tackle too many elements simultaneously. As a result, it occasionally felt disjointed, and while some of that disjointedness may have been intentional, it made it all the more challenging to remain fully engaged in the narrative.
Interestingly, I found myself most emotionally invested when the book delved into Harold’s past rather than the present mystery. On that note, the whole novel is written as a collection of letters by Harold. For the most part, I believe that aspect worked out reasonably well. However, I do wish the characters could have felt more human throughout the process, you know? I won’t delve into the book’s central antagonist or significant reveal, as I believe everyone will hold strong opinions about them, one way or another.
