This is part of a long mystery series about a semi (or perhaps the more appropriate word is reluctant) lawyer named Andy Carpenter who loves dogs.  I have not read the entire series which is very long (this is #32) but I have read enough to follow the character.  As a former lawyer myself, I find myself appreciating the protagonist because I too spent as much time trying to get out of the law as I was in it.  Andy is a man who wishes he was independently wealthy and lives in New Jersey (I do not live there but I once did, so I have a bit of an affinity for the state).  As every mystery solver does, he finds himself immersed in some mystery more often than he cares to be. In this novel, he takes on a case of a man who is accused of killing a man who set fire to a building in which his fiancé was murdered.  Obviously, he had a motive.  However, it would be a two minute mystery if it was that simple.

There is humor (a must in this kind of book), a focus (dogs) and suspense (will the would-be killer be exonerated)? Nonetheless, the book does not take itself too seriously, good thing for me because I was reading and listening to it after knee surgery.  I needed something light and humorous and this fit the bill.

If you are looking for something light, a little funny, an engaging protagonist that does not take himself too seriously, this is for you, especially as we approach the Christmas season.  It is also for cozy mystery readers.  Although it might be useful to read another in the series, it is definitely not a must.  I never have enough patience to read a whole long series myself and this is my third one.

I read part of it and listened to it.  The narrator was good.  Thanks to NetGalley and to St. Martin’s Press and to MacMillan Audio for providing me with the opportunity to read and to listen to this novel and audiobook.
