I read this author’s book, The First to Lie, back in 2020 and loved it. I was an outlier on the positive side for that one. I was excited to get Hank Phillippi Ryan’s newest release, and I wasn’t disappointed. In this book, debut author Tessa is on a book tour that turns into a nightmare when she realizes she is being stalked. The stalker wants to ruin her career and hurt her family. As the threats get worse, poor Tessa has to deal with a secret she’d rather keep hidden. Will Tessa find out who the stalker is before her secret is revealed?
This was a pretty cool concept, and the execution worked. It was tense yet not drawn out. This is the ultimate example of a page-turner. I couldn’t wait to see what would happen next and find out who the stalker was. I loved that it was about an author in a cat-and-mouse game with an unknown entity. Tessa wasn’t always likable, but she was well-defined and complex. There’s no boring, mousy woman in this one. The pace is fast, and the tension builds with a sense of dread throughout the entire book. There are plenty of red herrings, and the twists are clever without insulting the reader’s intelligence. I like the way Ryan portrays the cost of success and how secrets will always haunt you. If you enjoy a good psychological suspense thriller, this one will leave you satisfied.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC.
