Across the Green Grass Fields is the sixth novella in Seanan McGuire’s Wayward Children series. If you’ve never read that series, and love fantasy, I cannot recommend it enough to you. The delightful world-building and so very human characters have made it a longstanding favorite series of mine. It’s also worth noting that technically, Across the Green Grass Fields could be read as a standalone novel (though again; check out the whole series).

All Regan ever wanted was to be a normal little girl. A normal little girl who loved horses more than anything, that is. Unfortunately, the world and children can sometimes be cruel, and so getting her way was easier said than done.

That is until Regan found a door in the middle of the woods. It transported her to a whole new world – literally. Hoofland is the world of her dreams, where centaurs, unicorns, and kelpies are real beings – and they need her help.

Seanan McGuire has done it again! She’s written a rich and enthralling novella, one that is so beautifully human and emotional. I don’t think there will ever come a time when I don’t fall in love with the worlds she has created.

Regan’s story is empowering and thought-provoking, in all the best ways. It’s charming and unique – and will make a fantastic read for all the horse lovers and Wizard of Oz fans out in the world. Not to mention, those of us still searching for our own doors.
