I am absolutely obsessed with the Parisian Orphan series, from the very first page of this book I was drawn into Evelyne’s world I and couldn’t put it down. This gripping historical novel had me hooked, and I found myself eagerly turning each page to uncover the secrets hidden within the hallowed halls of Whitehall.
The main character, Evelyne, is an absolute delight. I immediately fell in love with her and couldn’t wait to learn more about her and her family life. Julia Kelly has crafted a protagonist with depth and complexity, making her relatable and endearing. Evelyne’s journey through the story is one filled with both vulnerability and strength, making her a character readers can’t help but root for.
The plot of A Traitor in Whitehall is pretty good, filled with suspense, political intrigue, and unexpected twists. Kelly tells a tale of mystery and deceit that kept me guessing until the very end. The pacing is well-done, and the story unfolds in a way that keeps you engaged throughout.
However, one minor aspect that left me slightly wanting was the murder victim itself. I thought the investigation and the chemistry between Evelyne and her partner were delightful but the person they’re investigating isn’t someone I could be interested in, I don’t want to say much more and give away any spoilers.
Overall, the best part of the book was the chemistry between Evelyne and her friends, as well as her fellow partner in crime, so to say. The relationships in the story add depth and heart to the narrative. The camaraderie, loyalty, and wit of these characters made me feel like I was part of their circle, and I loved their interactions.
A Traitor in Whitehall by Julia Kelly is a captivating historical novel filled with a compelling main character, a solid plot, and a delightful cast of characters. While the murder mystery could have been more gripping, the engaging relationships and the overall charm of the story more than make up for it. If you enjoy historical fiction with a touch of mystery and strong character dynamics, this book is a must-read. I definitely recommend it and can’t wait to read the next book in the Parisian Orphan series.
