This is a cute story from the Robots & Ruins sci-fi series set in Post Apocalyptic America. It follows on from Drowned Steel, the third book of the series, and I do think you need to have read at least some of the series to understand the characters. I very much enjoyed my festive visit back to Deer Valley, Minnesota, to catch up with diligent CleanerBot Block and his friends.
With Christmas approaching, Block has planned the perfect party at his hotel for the whole Deer Valley community, but a series of minor catastrophes, including a forecast blizzard, a toppled tree and a power cut are threatening to derail it. Meanwhile an old man called Jerry and his team of helper bots arrive looking for help when their flying snow glider breaks down while he’s on his annual toy delivery run.
This was adorable, from Jerry’s helpful “Coblots” to canine cyborg Shadow taking care of the hotel dog, Wally. The series as a whole is light sci-fi, suitable for older children and playful adults, and this one has plenty of humour and hope. I gather they will soon be available on Kindle Unlimited and I’d encourage anyone who likes this genre to check it out, starting with Steel Guardian.
