When I started to read “A Home for Friendless Women” I thought it will be a light read with a bit of secrets/mysteries… I was wrong. This book is not a light read, it takes place in a home in Louisville back in the 1870’s. The home is a place for females who have “sinned/fallen”in virtue and now they must learn to repent and the home will help rehabilitate them. The book is divided into three sections where each section focuses on a girl and her time at this particular house. While reading, I couldn’t help but compare how some things were eerily familiar to some of the things that women are facing today. I laughed, I rooted for the women in the house, but I also felt sadness, because the atmosphere of this home felt like a prison and instead of helping these women, they are treated like prisoners. Each character that is mentioned has dealt with trauma but reading how they tried to make the most out of everything while they were at the home made me continue to hope for a happy ending for everyone. After reading the book, I decided to google more about these type of homes and I stubbled upon a article/website mentioning a house like this in Louisville. For one I wasn’t as surprised when I found out this book may have been reflecting the actual home for friendless women that was founded in Louisville back in the 19th century. It is interesting to read about a home where it sounds like it can be a sanctuary for women but turns out it is far from it. Overall the author did an amazing job with the whole book. Her words grabbed me by the first page and did not let go. This book will always stay with me and I know I will reread it and continue to share it.
